Basic Outline
Initial setting: Occurs sometime in the early 19th century. The story begins in Louisiana on a cotton plantation. The story centers around two young women, Desdemona Moreau and Marie Baptiste. Desdemona is a house slave, and personal servant to Marie…and even a playmate and had been since she was a very little girl. Marie is the second child to Henre Baptiste, one of the largest cotton producers in Louisiana. Even though their positions in life are very…different, they are closer than most sisters are.
